The oldest boat dates back about 9,000 years ago to the Neolithic Stone Age. The dug-out canoes are believed to have been the first boats ever; they were made independently by various Stone Age populations. They were mostly used for fishing and traveling to different places. This type of boat was made out of a hollowed tree trunk.
Most of the time, when someone is stranded on an island they will build a boat by getting long fallen down trees and with rope, or something that is similar to rope, tie the trees together and it would float for a long time.
